Road Trip with Rover? How to Deal with Pets on the Go

The wind streaming through his fur, his tongue wagging in the breeze, the scenery and scents passing by: many dogs love road trips, the chance to explore new places, and, of course, the opportunity to hang out with their best friends. But a car ride is also a perfect time to leave behind a mess! Here are a few rules of the road to help remove pet stains and odors – and make your next trip a little cleaner. Pet Accidents en Route “Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” Just as your dog can’t bombard you with that question, he can’t say, “I gotta go! I gotta go!” If you have a puppy, it could be that he just can’t hold it, especially on longer trips. There are a few other reasons dogs have accidents (of all types) in cars: How to Deal with Pets on the Go
  • They’re excited. For some dogs, being in a car is like going to an amusement park. It’s just great. They love it so much they can’t contain themselves, literally.
  • They’re anxious. For others, a ride in the car can be a frightening or nerve-wracking situation. This may be exacerbated if you leave them in the car by themselves while you run into a store or make a quick stop. Make sure to be as calm as possible to soothe him.
  • They’re marking their territory. And if they do it once, and detect the scent, they’ll feel free to do it again, and again.
  • They’re wet or dirty. They don’t care. They jump right into their car, along with mud, leaves, sticks, and wet dog smell.
  • They have motion sickness. Unfortunately, nausea can strike dogs, too, and results in vomiting. If you have to take your dog in the car, give him a bone to chew and make sure he has fresh air. For severe motion sickness, your vet can prescribe medication that can make the journey much easier on both you and your dog.

Car messes are often stubborn and difficult to clean. They’re tightly enclosed; messes can get into the cracks and crevices of seats; and the sun warms the entire space, which can set stains and worsen odors. The best remedy is to remove stains immediately and prevent new ones:

Pick up an enzymatic cleaner with Ordenone. Enzymes are nature’s cleaning agents. They work to break down organic messes (urine, feces, blood, vomit, etc.) and eliminate them completely from your upholstery). One of our favorite’s is the newly launched KIDS ‘N’ PETS All Purpose Stain & Odor Remover Wipes.

The Ordenone captures malodors and unpleasant smells from vomit to wet fur are instantly neutralized. This is important because, well, it makes riding in your car much more pleasant! But it also removes the smell of urine-marking, which makes your dog less inclined to use your vehicle as a bathroom.

  • Make sure there is alcohol in the cleaner. Why? Because this helps the product dry faster, and it prevents mildew and mold from growing if you can’t leave your car doors open to dry the carpet or upholstery completely.
  • Take frequent bathroom breaks. Give your dog a chance to go before you put him in the car, and stop along the route. Remember that he could be excited or anxious, so he may not stick to his regular routine.
  • Put a pet mat on your seat. At least it’ll help keep fur off your upholstery and keep some of the mess at bay!
  • Consider a crate. A sturdy, secured crate keeps messes to a minimum. It also minimizes distractions and keeps both you and your dog safer if you have an accident or collision.

With these tips, you can keep your car looking and smelling clean. If your dog loves going for a drive, make sure you have a bottle of enzyme cleaner or the KIDS ‘N’ PETS Wipes with Ordenone handy, a chew toy to enjoy, and plenty of fresh air.
