  • A list of medications, vitamins or supplements you are currently taking
  • Insurance card(s)
  • Identification card (i.e. Driver’s License)
  • Any test results pertaining to your surgery (i.e. imaging tests such as x-rays, ultrasounds, etc.)
  • Contact lens case or glasses case
  • For overnight stays, you may wish to pack non-skid slippers, a robe, pajamas, and personal toiletries such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, hairbrush, etc.
  • If you’re not on a restricted diet, pack snacks so you have them on hand
  • Music and reading material are great entertainment that will also help you pass the time
  • Earplugs are a good idea to eliminate any noise, especially if you’re sharing a room with another patient
  • Bring something special to add a special touch to your room. If fresh flowers, a picture of your family, or your personal mug will cheer you up, bring it with you.

Checklist for Success

If you’re attending an America’s Best Hospital, then having a successful procedure and a safe hospital stay is a top priority for their physicians, nurses and support staff. But, as with any medical scenario, it’s critical that you are an active member of your healthcare team. Use this checklist to maximize your success before, during and after your hospital stay:

  • Follow any ‘pre-operation’ instructions:  If instructed, do not eat or drink for the required amount of time before your surgery. It’s also important to quit smoking. Even quitting for one day before surgery can decrease the likelihood of complications.
  • Share your medical history: Inform your medical team of allergies, medications or supplements you’re taking; previous responses to anesthesia; recreational drug or alcohol usage, or health conditions
  • Keep your I.D. wristband on: Keep it on during your entire stay at the hospital. It is for your safety and protection. Before having any procedures or tests, or taking any medications from hospital staff, make sure they check your wristband.
  • Practice medication safety:  Be sure to ask about the side effects of your medications; learn the brand and generic names so you’re informed when be administered medications or picking them up at a pharmacy
  • Minimize your risk of falling: Wear non-skid footwear; use handrails; ask for assistance if you’re dizzy; take note of your surroundings for tubes that can trip you or furniture on wheels
  • Minimize your risk of infection: Wash your hands and make sure hospital staff wash their hands before touching your wound or changing the dressing; don’t let visitors touch your wound; carefully follow wound care instructions; learn about the signs of infection
  • Understand your discharge instructions: Have your caretaker or family member take notes while you review your discharge instructions; follow doctor’s orders; ask questions, or to have the instructions be repeated
